Electric Actuators

OVERVIEW OF SMC ELECTRIC ACTUATORS

An electric Electric Actuators is a type of linear actuator driven by an electric motor. It is one of the key components in modern industrial automation systems, combining advanced technology with high reliability.

Electric actuators consist of two main parts:

    • Electric motor: Depending on the load and speed requirements, there are three basic types: Step motor, Servo motor and AC Servo Motor.
    • Actuation mechanism: This includes various types of movement, such as sliding, linear, rotational or clamping motions.

Classification of electric actuators

Electric actuators are classified based on the type of drive mechanism into two main types: ball screw drive and belt drive.

Ball Screw Drive (LEFS)
Ball Screw Drive (LEFS)

Belt Drive (LEFB)
Belt Drive (LEFB)

Ball Screw Drive (LEFS)

    • Operating Principle: The ball screw drive of the LEFS series uses a ball screw and nut system to move the actuator’s shaft. The ball screw is rotated by an electric motor, transferring force to the actuator through the screw and nut system.
    • Advantages: The ball screw provides precise movement with high resolution, making it suitable for applications that require high accuracy and repeatability. Additionally, it can handle heavier loads than a belt drive, making it ideal for applications requiring significant force and load-bearing capacity.
    • Disadvantages: The initial cost of a ball screw drive is generally higher than a belt drive. It also requires regular maintenance and lubrication to ensure smooth operation and long life.

Belt Drive (LEFB)

    • Operating Principle: The belt drive of the LEFB series uses a belt to transfer movement from the motor to the actuator. The belt is either tightened or loosened to control the actuator’s movement.
    • Advantages: Belt drives typically have a lower initial cost than ball screws. Without mechanical contact parts like a ball screw, the belt operates smoothly and quietly.
    • Disadvantages: Belt drives may not offer the same level of precision and resolution as ball screws. Additionally, they are limited in load-bearing capacity, making them less suitable for applications that require high force and load-bearing capability.

How to choose the right electric actuator

    • For applications requiring high precision, good repeatability, and heavy load-bearing capacity, the ball screw drive (LEFS) is the better choice.
    • For applications where initial cost reduction and smooth operation are priorities, the belt drive (LEFB) is more appropriate.

The choice between a ball screw and belt drive depends on the specific application requirements and technical factors such as precision, load-bearing capacity, cost and maintenance needs.

Benefits of using electric actuators

    • Increased productivity: High precision and reliability lead to increased production efficiency.
    • Energy savings: Electric motors are more energy-efficient compared to pneumatic cylinders.
    • Easy integration: Electric actuators can be easily integrated and controlled in modern automation systems.
    • Simple setup and control: Position, speed, acceleration and especially the ability to repeat positions with high accuracy can be easily set up and controlled.

Applications of SMC electric actuators

SMC electric actuators are widely used in various industrial sectors including:

    • Industrial robots: Used in robotic arms for precise and agile movements.
    • Automation equipment: Integrated into automation devices such as machine tools and production lines to perform manufacturing processes efficiently.
    • Medical applications: SMC electric actuators are also used in automated medical equipment to perform medical procedures safely and accurately.
